On Monday, 07 July 2014, Prof. Dr. Gabriel Weimann from the Department of Communication at Haifa University (Israel) gave a presentation on new trends in the field of cyber terrorism.
Including many examples from cyber savvy terrorists and their activities in Germany, Prof. Dr. Weimann demonstrated how modern terrorist organizations apply social media platforms as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Taking these developments into account, he suggested the support of monitoring and regulating such terrorist organizations in cyber space as well as developing new defenses in digital area to protect governments and citizens. During the discussion with the president of the Saxon police, Rainer Kann, it became clear, that there is a thin line between monitoring every activity in cyber space for the safety and respecting the privacy of unmolested people. In the end, there needs to be a compromise between fighting against cyber terrorists and protecting privacy.
